I've included a link to FileMaker's information on Citrix. The advantages to
using a terminal services application is the deployment. If all of the users
are connecting via terminal services then you only have one computer to
perform upgrades on. You will need a computer for FileMaker Server and also
a computer to host the files with a specially licensed copy of FileMaker. In
fact, I believe you'll have to actually call FileMaker for a license key.
You can't just purchase a standard license to FileMaker Pro. The computer
hosting the files will have Citrix Metaframe Server installed on it and you
will want to run it on Windows 2000 Server. The clients will be able to
print reports at the remote printer. That's just a configuration in the
Citrix or terminal services client. The only drawback that I'm aware of
would be that FileMaker plugins won't work. It would be better to read the
info at their website.

I'm not certain it's completely clear from what David is writing that Citrix
requires Terminal Server. Some of the advantages that Citrix, a proprietary
layer added to TS, has over TS in Windows 2000 Server, became less obvious
in TS in Windows 2003 Server, which allows the use of local printers,
mapping to the local drive, and even sound, as well as full depth color
(Win2K was limited to 256). In any of these combinations, Filemaker Pro
requires a VLA ('Volume License Agreement'), which can be purchased directly
from FMI, or from some other vendors.
TS, even by itself, provides a remarkably fast connection for Filemaker,
which offers notoriously slow performance when remotely accessed directly
via TCP/IP. It is a bit tricky to set up, and Citrix adds yet more
complexity (and performance), but I find the result is well worth the
trouble and expense.

To clarify, Citrix works in conjunction to Terminal Services. Basically, it
adds additional features to it as well as support for more OS's.

John,
Will this scenario work?
Install VLA on Citrix machine. Run two PC workstations at a remote
site with access to the LAN that the Citrix machine is on - obviously.
Will the FMPRO clients running via Citrix be able to connect and work
with FMPro Server 5.5 running on OS9 machine that is on the same LAN
as the Citrix machine?
Thanks so much for your input.
