I'm trying to print to a label, size 1 7/16" tall by 4" wide, using
WIN XP Pro, FMP 5.5, and an OKI Microline 320 Turbo dot matrix
printer.

Is anyone printing labels to ANY dot matrix and having success? I'd
like to know the printer model you're using, and I'll just go buy the
same. (as long as you can consistently print onto continuous feed
labels, and not experience any type of weird margin/header/creep
problems.)

I explained all the settings I'm using in a previous post, so I won't
go into it here. At this point I would just like a list of printers
that ACTUALLY WORK under the conditions mentioned previously.  Thanks
a lot.

Use ;-)
DYMO LABELWRITER 330 TURBO

The trick is to use (in windows) Generic / Text only printer...
The character are new courier 10 cpi or 12 cpi...
You have to sen ASCII codes to the printer to set it.
Use a DOS-command to do that.
You can find plugins to write a text-file an to call the system o send
commands to the printer...

A few years back (i.e., not in OS X) I used Troi's Serial plug-in to
converse with an Epson receipt printer for a project I was working on.
Figuring out their (Epson's) op-codes for driving the print took a
little surfing/work (mostly because their documentation varied between
non-existent to sucked) but after a week or so had it printing and
cutting text-centric receipts. I was working on printing bitmaps when I
shelved things ('cause I lost interest ... the project was of a personal
nature). Printing text to machines like these is usually a relatively
thing to learn/do. I'm not sure what the state of Troi's serial plug-in
is these days.

Steve,

The OKI 320 Driver that ships with XP is the source of the problem.
Several applications in addition to Filemaker have similar problems
printing to the OKI 320 under XP.

Here are a few things to try that might help:

Use a different driver: try the XP driver for the newer 420 series
ftp://ftp2.okidata.com/pub/drivers/sidm/4201WLXE.exe

For some strange reason XP often autodetects this printer as ML 321
Turbo/D (DEC). The DEC driver can cause unexpected results because
some of the control codes are interpreted differently or ignored.

The OKI 320 can emulate and EPSON FX, and IBM Proprinter III or and
OKI Data Microline Standard. Change the emulation on the printer and
try the EPSON FX286e driver, IBM PP3 or OKI Microline driver based on
the emulation that you picked.

The emulation change process is a little weird:

Make sure paper is loaded. Press SHIFT + SEL. The printer enters the
Menu Mode. Press LF. The following line prints:
Printer Control Emulation Mode IBM PPR

Press TEAR consecutively until the emulation you wish to select prints
in the right-hand column. Press SHIFT + SEL to save your setting and
exit the Menu Mode.

Depending on your printers current setup you may need to toggle the
I-Prime signal setting. On the 320 its Reset Inhibit yes or no.

Newer model OKI 420s cost about $340.00. Experimenting with the
drivers/emulations is a little tedious but enabled us to keep some of
the old OKI 320's in service.
