Hi Howard,
Create the field as a regular text field.
Place the field on the layout. Select the field. In field format in the
format menu change it to check box. Next to this in the field format options
box in will say <No Lists Defined>. Click the down arrow and choose Define
Value Lists . You will need to then define a value list so the system knows
what the Check mark represents. Just define a list called check mark, and
give it one value of Y. This can be actually anything you like - it could be
a full word that represents what you are checking for, or you could also
have made the field a number field and made your value 1.
Back on your layout you can resize the checkbox so that you can only see the
checkbox, and not the text next to it.

Caitlin... I have followed all your instructions.... with only one value
in the checkbox value list - and all seemed fine...
Until I then go to add a record. All my fields fill in fine but when I
click on this field it does nothing.....
Is there no way to have it appear as a 'tick' or a radio buton etc etc ?
when I click it ?

Does it look like a small box, and it is just that you cannot select it?
Make sure te field is set to 'allow entry into this field' which is an
option at the botton on the field definition box. Another possible cause -
if you have set the line colour for that field to the same as your
background or no line the check mark would not show up.

Make sure in the Field Borders you set the line thickness to at least
Hairline and in a contrasting colour to the layout.
You'll see the little square appear only if the Field Borders are turned on
with a colour.
All the best.
