If you run a server version 5, can you use a desktop version 6 or 7 or must
they all be the same?

You can use version 5, 5.5 or 6, but not 7.

Server 5.0 will let you have 5.0, 5.5 or 6.0 on the desktop

There is no fowards/backwards compatability V7 to earlier versions in any
flavour of FileMaker.
