I received a FMP mail today that FMP7 support will end 2008-09-26.
Not that I ever received any support, while reporting bugs :-(

.fpx would be an incompatible new data format again. (.fp3, .fp5, .fp7).
I feel that FMP8 was more some kind of FMP7.1 (or even just a FMP7
bugfix). FMP9 might justify for the FMP8 name, Thus we will not see a
new .fp9 format, since FMP9 still takes .fp7.
(.fpx is already used for Kodak's Flash Pix .bmp format, while FoxPro
used the same extension)

Where did ".fpx" come from?
FMI does not announce release dates far in advance. It does not
announce format changes in advance either, and to assume the next
version of FM will include a format change is wildest speculation.
The OP wanted to know if they should continue to pay the maintenance
fees that will let them upgrade for minimal cost. Historically, the
releases of paid upgrade versions of FM have been 18-24 months apart,
sometimes sooner. The business case for paying maintenance depends on
the certain cost of the maintenance versus the possible cost of upgrade
fees for the number of seats the business has.
It also depends on whether or not the solution in place fulfills all
the needs of the business. If it does, the case for an immediate
upgrade is less than if there are "want list" items that might be
fulfilled by a new version. Heck, I've got clients still in FM 5.5
because they are satisfied with the way it works. At least until it
stops working on new hardware or OSes.
No one can predict the exact next release date. Based on historical
evidence, it should be sometime in the next year. But maybe not.

It's just a guess, since MacOS changed from 6,7,8,9 to Mac OSX.
The roman number X for ten would be an obvious choice.

Yes, I migrated myself from FMP4 to late FMP6 - but I had FMP 6 long
enough to be disappointed from all FMP7 flaws.

Perfectly true...
