Hi,

If we want to replace our current production server with DB2 UDB 8.1 on AIX 5.
3 and use redirected restore for the production databases to be “copied” into
our new db2 with server. Which backup is more appropriate for our databases
that have not too much but constant data change? Our current database is set
archieved log. We’re afraid that it could take us up to a few days to
complete the whole process including server setup DB2 installation and
database restore. Online backup seem to be able to roll-forward to the point
of the latest transaction log after the backup was made. It seems a right way
to do the backup for us. However, it is saying that “in order to restore a
recoverable database (using version recovery and roll-forward recovery), the
database must be taken offline.” On the page of
http://www.phptr.com/articles/article.asp?p=169530&seqNum=3&rl=1. which
caused us confusion. We hope someone who can give us an answer.
Thanks!
Lan

Lan,

When you are restoring your database users cannot work on the
destination database until the restoration process finishes.

In your case is not a problem.

1) Do online backup.
2) Restore your database in the new environment
3) Rollforward all logs which were archived since the backup.
4) Shut down the source database.
5) Rollforward the rest of the logs and complete the rollforward phase.
6) Switch the users to the new database.

The system outage will be very short (=time needed to rollforward the
last logs).

Hi Artur,

Thanks for your message before and sorry for the late reply. I followed you
suggestion to to setup the new db2 AIX seerver. I finished step 1,2,3,. but
Iwhen I execute the step 3 of  rollforward, I did "rollforward db cfdev to
end of logs and stop". which bring the database to normal state now. it is :
Rollforward Status

Input database alias                   = cfdev
Number of nodes have returned status   = 1

Node number                            = 0
Rollforward status                     = not pending
Next log file to be read               =
Log files processed                    = S0000400.LOG - S0000407.LOG
Last committed transaction             = 2006-02-24-20.18.48.000000

so I'm not sure after step 4 of shu down the source database, how can I do
another rollforward of my new db2 server.  Could you give me an idea?

Thanks!
Lan
