Replication on 1 server

do I need to have 2 systems to play around with replication, or can I
perform replication from 1 db to another on the same system?

You do not necessarily need TWO systems.
You can setup REPLICATION between TWO databases in the same SYSTEM.

You can even replicate _within_ the same database.
