I am working with a client using IDS 10 over HP with ~4TB of data. In
prep for their peak season, we've been "gutting" both the hardware
(moving to Veritas Clustering and related items) and the engine layout
over the last year. Early testing looks great with regards to
performance when load is up to 5X what is expected. The consultant
working the hardware side recently said very plainly..."I'm just glad
IDS is what it is and can be administered as easy as it can. It would
have been impossible to make all the major environment - hardware and
software - changes with any other product."

Now all that needs to happen is for IBM to convert that into a full page
ad running in all those magazines that usually only have Micro$oft and
Orable ads.

Ours is approaching 2T in one instance. ( we have 5 instances on the same
box ).
We have a couple of history tables with 1.5 billion rows in them. Not a
great thing !

Such as the U2 product line. A literal cash cow to IBM for minimal amount of support.

IBM has been investing in IDS and has made some verbal statements which does not support your hypothesis. Or rather it shows a dichotomy between different areas within the pillar. Not a good thing.  The problem is that within the pillar, not all the members of the choir are singing the same song or even in the same key. That says a lot too. Any positive work being done is being hampered by this and again, for all the "positive" things being said by IBM, the street isn't buying it.

To InDeep's point. Opensource companies with a tenth of the budget that IDS has is getting a lot more press. It seems that someone within SWG exec management should liven things up.

BTW, sorry if I come across as "sour grapes". I'm merely pointling out how the street views IBM.

But hey! What do I know? I just happen to hit a string of clients who deem IBM as overpriced and choice of last resort.

Just as an FYI, the stuff from the oninit site is really good, a caveat must be added though. It's a little out of date once you get to 10.00.FC5.

I think Fernando may have been referring to me, and I will be at the conference, and I will also put in a plug that Yes, I am doing a performance tuning presentation regarding B-tree cleaning, with some extra focus on ALICE mode.

In the meantime just ask away, I try to keep up and answer b-tree stuff.

Failure is not as frightening as regret.
If you want to improve, be content to be thought foolish and stupid.
