my favorite quote from the first video:
"all i have to do is just sit back and wait and my database will be created,
hopefully, at some point in time."
but that quote can't hold a candle to my favorite quote from the second
video:
"the job of actually finding out how the database should be installed, what
options should be in there, what parameters should be set was done by me
before hand and that took a month"
no wonder this dude is in a straight jacket

"I think we will choose the same password for all accounts" yeah like
that is SOX compliant!
"We do not need Oracle Text"... how you know that?
"We will put the ftp port as port 42" WTF? This is a database not an
ftp server.
"We will put the http port at.." WTF? A database is not a Web
server...
And you wonder why a default install takes 768MB of memory...

He knows that because he knows what capabilities it has.
Very few people need it.
But when they do it solves a very difficult problem.

Since Captn seems to ignore this thread I feel thr need to point out:
Databases don't get installed, they get created. DBMS get installed.
Seriously:
If he designed the settings for a month himself, why oh why did he
outsource the typing to IBM?
Cheers

I'm a bit confused, too. Was he installing the product (as in "off the
media") or just creating databases? If he was just creating databases ...
that's hardly a freaking advert for Oracle!
And WTF was he spending a month on? Danish porn sites?

Installing the full product using the advanced install feature.
And I might point out on an extremely slow laptop. I would normally
expect the full installation to take less than 20 minutes.

Excluding the patches...
In a recent Oracle Client 10gR2 installation the install part was as quick as
useless... No one could access the files (libraries needed for runtime for
example) because the FS permissions would only allow the Oracle user to access
them... Then there was a patch... nice... but the patch needed a tool to apply
the patch... Luckily the DBA got tired of it, extracted the SHELL script (the
only useful thing in the patch) and checked the contents... nothing more than a
"chmod"... GREAT install experience... totally SUCKs compliant (ups... SOX)
Regards.

Get a new DBA. The "tool" has been built into the base install since at
least the 1980s. Even my first quarter students know how to use it.
One thing that always truly amazes me is how people say "well our DBA
blah blah blah ..." like the fact that they know and work with this
person somehow instills the person with a seat in the House of Lords.
You are, based on your description, working with a dinosaur who has
not a clue about anything current within the current millenium.
Same for your SOX related comments.
