We are planning to migrate our database server to a VMware server.
The new machine will be a HP BladeServer with 2 Quadcore-processors (=8
cores),
but the (virtual) Linux-OS will only use 2 (virtual) cpu cores.
How many processor licences are necessary ?
Which database editons (Enterprise, Workgroup, Express) are
available for virtual machines ?
Thanks

Hello Martin,
If I remember correctly,
1. IDS Express
- Continuous logging
- Minimum 5 total users / server
- Maximum 2 CPU's and 4 Gb RAM
- Linux and Windows only.
2. IDS Workgroup Edition
- Parallel stuff, HDR, and hyperloader cost extra
- Minimum 5 concurrent (or 5 total) users / server
- Maximum 4 CPU's and 8 Gb RAM
- Unix, Linux and Windows only.
3. IDS Enterprise
- Enterprise Replication
- Minimum 10 concurrent (or 25 total) users / 100 value units
- Maximum CPU and RAM are unlimited
- Unix, Linux and Windows only.
Since you have the equivalent of 8 CPU's it looks like you are stuck
with choice number 3. But the good news is that I am pretty sure you
can just pay for the Virtual CPU's.

My understanding is that there remains no "sub-capacity licensing" for IDS
Workgroup.
Therefore, even oif your VM may have only a subset of the total processors
allocated to it, you will have to pay for 400 PVUs of IDS, this being the
PVU requirement for the overall 2 x quad-core Intel procs.
I'm almost certain that Light Scans is wrong when he says "But the good news
is that I am pretty sure you can just pay for the Virtual CPU's". Unless
things have changed *very* recently.

Take a look at Carlton Doe's concise article "Compare the Informix
Dynamic Server Version 11 editions"
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/db2/library/techarticle/dm-0801doe/index.html?

In very short - only enterprise edition can be licensed on a subcapacity
deal.
