Yes its ironic that Gumby is thinking green. (The truth is that the
nickname of Gumby has nothing to do with the claymation figure but
thats beside the point...)

On a serious note, green sells.

Doing more with less.

IDS is one of the more efficient engines out there. There is that win
from two years ago (the gaming company that reduced their server count
to *10%* by switching to IDS over SQL Server).

IDS is better suited towards the newer generation of CPUs. (Multi
threaded / multi core) processors.

So why doesn't IBM promote IDS as a "green alternative"?

Ok, I know the answer to it, I'm just hoping that Jerry and/or Kathy
and/or Alyse et al would put down the doughnut and coffee and work on
this idea.

Benchmarks are important too.
There's IBM's cell datablade that isn't being pushed. And of course
Sun Micro has their Rock chips coming out this next year.

Somehow I don't think a TPC/C or TPC/E on either platform would draw a
comparison to DB2 since AFAIK, DB2 hasn't been ported to either
platform yet. ;-)

I'd pick on Oracle, but as Mark pointed out, there are some drawbacks
to Oracle's core design that make it less efficient than IDS in terms
of the newer architecture and virtualization. This isn't a dig on
Oracle. After all they are the 900lb Gorilla. (They really need to go
on a diet :^ )

So anyone else have some "green" reference stories that they can pony
up to IBM?

If there's still anybody in IBM who has the patience to talk to you,
call them up and ask them about this quarter's sales plays. The donut
was put down ages ago.

Still, you keep banging on, at least it keeps you from doing something
really dangerous, like work.

Oh you're gonna burn in hell for that one! Why you such a hater?
:-P

I think we're starting to see a backlash where the cheapest hourly solution provider doesn't necessarily mean the most cost effective solution provider.
