I have a replica standby ingres server.

My DR strategy is...

Copy over ckp, jnl and dmps once the checkpoint is completed each night.
then shutdown ingres, mv the files to the appropriate areas start ingres and
rollforwarddb the database. This is working like a charm.

My query is - Is it possible to continually copy the jnl/dmp files over
throughout the day and use something like "rollforwarddb -c dbname" to apply
the journals to this standby server? Hopefully this would leave me with a
server that is only a few records out of date.

Everything I've tried so far has ended up with a inconsistent database or
can't rollforward.

Cheers

Gareth

Gareth

a couple of years ago I did exactly this with input from Martin, Karl
and Roy.
What I did was:

1) checkpoint of production machine to disk

2) copy across ckp, dmp, jnl file to hot standby machine

3) rollforward on standby machine

4) to the above with iidbdb but copy to an archive directory.

5) during the day on the production machine I do an alterdb -osmething
- forgot what thi sis to force a new journal file

6) copy across the journal file just closed to a staging area on the
hotstandby machine

Here I gave the client two options:

1) to immediately apply the journal on the hot standby machine
2) not to apply the journal unless it was an emergency or the
production machine died

They opted to go for option one as they were going to use the HSM as a
report server and could not have the system down every hour to apply
the journals. I did get this working without having the db go
inconnsistent.

The scripts are avalible if I can lay my hands on them if you want but
they are for a tru64 environment.

It canbe done but there is some trickery with the files. I did not
have to edit the cnf file to get this going.

It has now been running since 2002 without major problems. The only
problems we have had was running out of space on the checkpoint
directory.

Give me a yell if you want the scripts - I will try and get them

If possible I wouldn't mind having a look at your scripts just to give me
some pointers. As I mentioned I've managed to create a script that'll get
the appropriate files from production, shutdown ingres, copy the files to
the ckp/dmp/jnl and copy aaaaaaaa.cnf, start ingres and rollforward
successfully.

I'm using rsync to get the files from production at a set interval, what I'm
trying to avoid is having to use the ckp files in the rollforward.

Many Thanks

Gareth
