Everybody:
I'm curious about something. Currently, I deal with an exremely old
version of Ingres running under OpenVMS with actual VMS clustering,
though we only start DBMS servers on a single node for any given
database.
We're at least two major revisions of Ingres back.
Do current versions of Ingres provide any type of "clusterware" like
Oracle RAC does for various operating systems? Or do we still need to
get some underlying clusterware? I am aware that Oracle licensed the
technology from Digital - but I'm curious if Ingres has anything
because I'd really like to test it out (a newer version) if they do
have similar technology.
Thanks very much...

Hello Charles,
Ingres 2006 supports clustering on Linux, and sometime around March
2007 should support clustering on OpenVMS. You will still need a
clustered filesystem (as does Oracle RAC). This "Ingres 2006 Guide for
Linux" ( http://downloads.ingres.com/download/gs-linux.pdf ) will tell
you a bit more about Ingres clustering.
HTH.

Is this a hint that we should expect Ingres 2006 to be GA for VMS
around Q1 next year?

Yes - Ingres plans on releasing the VMS platform for Ingres 2006 in Q1.
Target is March 1. Ingres is releasing Ingres 2006 rls 2 beta this week
for testing on the linux active passive failover solution as well.

It's not clear from your posting that you *need* clustering. Perhaps
it would make more sense to divide the cluster into stand-alone
systems, and then migrate one at a time.
If you'd like to preserve the VMS systems but use new hardware, please
let me propose a Shameless Plug (tm) for CHARON-VAX and CHARON-Alpha:

I have several CHARON-VAX customers running some amazingly ancient
versions of Ingres.
