| 2NF Controversy | 30 May 2004 23:56 GMT | 7 |
1) One side suggests that in order for a table to violate 2NF, the table must have attributes that are dependent on only part of a compound PK--this implies that 2NF violations only apply to situations in which a table has a compound PK. This requirement has been stated ...

| Ah, but who has better parties? | 29 May 2004 17:58 GMT | 90 |
It struck me when reading one of Leondro's responses to mountain man that over the past two years of studying first pick and then relational databases (history, theory, and practice), along with OO and XML, I have gotten a bit of the "flavor" of each sub-culture (just a bit).

| Grouping is an entity | 26 May 2004 16:50 GMT | 1 |
There are events, a rehearsal, another rehearsal, a performance. etc. These are instances of entity type 'event'. They have attributes like venue, start time, date etc. A group of them together make up a production (there may be some BOM type

| Date is Incomplete - database application software and database theory | 25 May 2004 17:36 GMT | 58 |
My reading of Date allows me to assert his detailed coverage of the theoretical ground of database systems technology lacks any meaningful discussion of the (one would implicity assume exists) application

Hey, I'm featured in dbdebunk.com's quote of the week, and not even in a particularly bad way! The Q: is me, and the A: is Neo. I suppose Bob would take me to task for feeding the trolls.

I am relatively new to database design, and what I am working on is definitely pushing the envelope of my abilities. So I wanted, hopefully, to get a second opinion. The databse is for accepting photograph submissions for an online

| Origin of the concept of "data model" | 20 May 2004 18:27 GMT | 4 |
In the "Network Data Model" thread, there was some discussion whether E.F. Codd deserves credit for originating the concept of the data model. "Conventional wisdom has it that Codd invented not only the concept of network and hierarchical data models, but the very concept of a data ...

| Data Display & Modeling | 18 May 2004 13:32 GMT | 61 |
Let's say that someone likes to model data as functions [e.g. PERSON(key)=tuple ], in non-1NF and in di-graphs (so you can navigate your way through it), with a target implementation in XML or PICK. I have heard people say that is a good way to "view" the data, but we need to model ...
