views that use it also get dropped. What was Informix thinking on this

Make sure about your sqlhosts (that the hostname is correct - column 3). Incorrect hostname can also give you this message - common mistake when you copy or rename an sqlhosts file from another machine.
and that you are using the correct service / port  (/etc/services)
