changing XE service name to something else13 Sep 2007 09:08 GMT5
I'm using Oracle 10g XE. Is there a way to change the default service
name from 'XE' to something else?
Thanks in advance,

import with rows=N13 Sep 2007 08:12 GMT5
I have full export of a database [Oracle 7] taken with rows=N option.
Now I want to create the same database (structure only, as it doesnt
contain the data) on some other machine [Oracle 10gR2]. For that I
created a new database, then created tablespaces, of 150 MB each with
trouble with RAC db start13 Sep 2007 03:05 GMT3
All,
Let me know your thoughts on the below.  My client blew away his OCR.
I did a restore of the OCR and now the db won't start.  Here's the
command line syntax and tail of the crs log:
High elapsed/cpu ratio13 Sep 2007 02:34 GMT25
I'm working on tuning a particular query and have gotten the explain
plan as pretty as possible, low cost, etc.  However, when running the
query (an insert into table select ... statement), I find the
following information in the tkprof trace file:
Memory Allocations13 Sep 2007 00:10 GMT2
I was told by someone that the general rule of thumb for the initial memory
allocation in an Oracle instance was something like 40% for the SGA and 60%
for the PGA.
Anybody willing to comment on how accurate/inaccurate that statement was?

SYSTEM and SYSAUX Tablespace Opinions Requested12 Sep 2007 23:03 GMT11
In the database I work on at work it appears that there are many user
accounts which have been created with the system privilege UNLIMITED

I brought this to the attention of my manager mentioning that no user

OID 10g unregister database12 Sep 2007 18:53 GMT1
We have set up a OID one-way LDAP replication. Last night, the replica
filesystem got corrupted. Since we do not have a good backup of this
replica, I tried to reinstall the replica. During the install process,
the installer complained that the database was already registered with

Question about revoking select from PUBLIC12 Sep 2007 18:26 GMT7
All of our tables have PUBLIC synonyms and of course PUBLIC has SELECT
privileges on all of them. How can I make some of them visible ONLY to
certain users?  If I drop the PUBLIC synonyms, nobody except the owner
can see them. If I keep the PUBLIC synonyms everyone sees them.  We
dbms_errlog12 Sep 2007 18:21 GMT4
I'm new to oracle, I installed oracle 10g  version 2 and I'm the
administrator on this box.  I'm trying to execute the
dbms_errlog.create_error_log command  through SQL Plus but I keep
getting the error message:
Problem with update uses two tables12 Sep 2007 17:15 GMT3
I've had a problem with (probably) simple query. I want to update one
field in one table when another field in this table is equal to
another field in another table (they have the same type of course).
This should be something like this (each table has two field - id and
Oracle and Perl installation conflict12 Sep 2007 15:52 GMT3
I have the latest ActivePerl installed on my laptop, and Oracle 10g
personal edition as well. When I run a perl script that uses any
modules, I get a message like this:

deadlocks and redologs interaction12 Sep 2007 15:40 GMT7
I'm still relatively green as a DBA, so excuse the possibly simple
question...
We have a DB that is seeing a lot of deadlocks, occasionally hundreds
at a time.  Yes, typically this is an external-application/development
